Community Service

Boy Scouts is, among other things, a SERVICE organization.  One of the best ways for Scouts to show their SCOUTING SPIRIT is by taking part in the Troop service projects that we support.  Most rank advancements require a Scout to volunteer a minimum amount of hours to service projects.  However, Troop 494 has a tradition of providing more than the minimum service to the community.  Service Projects give us tremendous recognition in the community and we have fun doing it.

Troop 494 participates one evening a month in a local church's program to provide meals to those who are in need.  We send a contingent of scouts to help serve the meal and do anything else that needs to be done.

In the springtime, we provide the "boy power" to help clean-up a local cemetery.  The scouts spend one or more evenings raking up leaves and sprucing things up.

In June, Troop 494 participates in White Bear Lake's Manitou Days celebration by helping with the 15K running event.  We organize the event, provide help with registration of the runners, set-up the water stations, provide timekeepers, man the finish line refreshment area, and provide scouts as race marshals to keep the runners on the proper course.

In the fall, the scouts use their leaf raking skills to help clean-up several local elderly persons yards.

Troop 494 also participates in the Indianhead Council's event called Scouting For Food.  This is a food drive to restock local food shelves.

If you have and additional ideas for troop community service projects, contact contact the community service chairman on the Adult Leaders page.
